MOTHER PRAISES POSITIVE IMPACT OF 'IN ONE INSTANT'
Letter to Editor/Palisadian-Post/June 7, 2012
I am a parent whose teenager participated in the 'In One Instant' safe-driving program held at Palisades Charter High School on May 30th. This program has had an intense impact on my son and me; we value the ability to see, touch, hold and speak with each other every moment that we have. The program brought reality to the agony, despair and loss that the death of a child brings, and the senseless harm, heartache and death that one decision can make for a teen.
The program clearly showed the peer pressure involved between friends, and my son and I realize that we have the right to make a decision that is safe and smart, even if it disappoints friends, family and teachers. To have friends, parents or teachers angry about a teen’s behavior is far less scary than being dead or in jail from a poor decision made in a tense situation.
We as a family have decided to just TURN THE PHONE OFF WHILE DRIVING. That way we are not distracted by texts or calls, and when we arrive safely, we can return any messages that came in while we were driving. Our advice: Just put the temptation away and don’t have the phone on until you arrive at the destination.
I sincerely hope that 'In One Instant' will have a positive impact on the communities where each student lives, that teenagers and families will take their driving far more seriously and consider how precious life and freedom is without taking an instant for granted.
